What is Holistic Wellness?
There are dozens of terms that describe treatments or therapies that are not part of the allopathic,
Western Medicine model. From “Eastern,” to “Energetic,” “Complementary,” “Alternative,” “Natural” and of
course “Holistic,” these terms are not specific or explanatory. The practices described in the Guide run
the gamut of theories and origins: Ayurveda, for example, is a complete healthcare system that originated
in India thousands of years ago; the Feldenkrais Method® is a movement therapy that was developed in Europe
in the 20th Century. With such diversity, it’s impossible to lump all the available therapies into one
classification. That’s why the Guide to Holistic Wellness explains each type of practice, and we encourage
you to do further research on any practice that interests you.
There is a wide variety of holistic practices represented in this year’s Guide, and the brief
descriptions we’ve included should by no means be considered definitive. Many of the practitioners
have included their website addresses in their listings, so please visit their websites or call
practitioners directly for more information.
There are two guiding principles of holistic wellness that are important to note:
- One principle is that holistic practices address the whole person, not just a person’s symptoms. The goal is to return the person to complete health, rather than just eliminate a symptom without addressing the underlying cause.
- The second principle is that we are each responsible for own wellness, so use your best judgment choosing a practitioner or using any therapy or treatment.
Acupuncture/Acupressure
In Acupuncture, very fine needles are inserted into the body at
certain points. The points are along meridians, pathways throughout
the body where life energy (called Chi or Qi) flows. Inserting the
needles or applying pressure stimulates the points, unblocking the
flow of Chi energy. In acupressure, pressure is applied to these
points.

Biofeedback
Traditional Biofeedback measures a subject's bodily processes, such as
blood pressure, heart rate, skin temperature, galvanic skin response
(sweating), and muscle tension. Quantum Biofeedback measures the
electromagnetic frequencies of; the organs, tissues, bacteria or fungi
present, and everything in the subject's environment. In both types of
biofeedback, the goal is to alert the subject to their physiological
responses, so they can gain conscious control over muscle tension,

Childbirth
In Bradley Method(R) of Natural Childbirth classes, couples learn how
to have natural births. The simple techniques teach couples to work
with the mother's body to reduce pain and make her labor more
efficient, without drugs or unnecessary interventions.
Certified Professional Midwives (CPM) must meet rigorous standards to
attain the CPM designation. Rather than "delivering babies," midwives
"attend births," only intervening when necessary. CPMs attend births
in homes and birth centers, and provide pre-natal and postpartum care
to mothers and infants. They are trained to recognize and deal with
"abnormal" situations, including breech birth and posterior position.

CranioSacral Therapy

In the 1840s, European doctors noticed that, while miners often
suffered from debilitating respiratory diseases, salt miners were

Homeopathy—from Greek homoeo (meaning similar) and pathos (meaning
suffering)—treats “like with like.” This same principle is used in
creating antidotes and vaccines used in mainstream medicine. Whereas

Kinesiology is the use of “muscle testing” as a diagnostic tool: when
